There are different types of top turns. A vertical snap is a lot like a kick turn but you can also do for instance a carve. It depends on the wave and how it needs to be surfed. Reading and adjusting is all part of the game.

John Dennis definitely. Here's one of mine (on the left) side by side with Ozzi. Who is a whole lot better than me.
It does translate into the water. Assuming the waves where you live allow that kind of surfing. And if course a tight top turn requires a a deep bottom turn, which requires the right line etc etc.
