Graham Marsden - so you got me thinking. I had to lay on the floor and practice my Oreo/ pop-up - I am pushing hard through my torso/midsection but my thighs/legs are almost off the board with no weight on them at all. Do I need to instead push weight through legs(top of feet almost) to get the most from this technique? That could totally explain why I am catching the wave so late - not getting the push from the wave from the tail of the board, rather the mid-section under my waist.

Maria MolĆØ 100% - amazing eye! It was my first time there and I just couldn’t get the take-off location correct. Have to start the opposite direction of the wave - bizarre for sure

Ok Graham Marsden. I will focus on keeping my legs straight and together. I will keep you updated. Thanks for your input!

Here’s a great example of me missing waves. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I am trying to stay relaxed and not waste energy, I just feel like I am dead weight as the wave passes me by. I am trying to arch my back, but I just can’t pick-up the wave. I see others just glide in with 2 strokes at my same location. My board volume should be on the money 195pds=38 liters - this was a rnf96. Please help. Thank you

Yep, agree 100%.

What I don’t show are the multiple waves before this one that I completely miss when trying to catch them. Maybe I can send you a clip of that and you can help me to understand what I doing wrong.

Thank you so much for your reply Graham Marsden .

So the feedback from the other day was great and I really think you started to uncover what is going on with my current pop-up situation. This video is a better shot of what I seem to be doing (especially on my backhand).

Clayton mentioned ā€œstand-upā€, but I could really use some more insight why I keep grabbing the damn rails and popping-up so low and squatted. I do think there is something there with the late take-offs, but feel there is more I am missing. Thanks all for your help!

Hey Graham-

Thanks for your response.

Another thing I keep doing is popping-up into a deep ā€œsquatā€ position, where I really need to muscle my way up to stance. I’m in the correct ā€œsprinters stanceā€, but just deep (while knees bent past 45 degrees and my butt very close to my board - makes it a challenge to stand up to normal surf position.@graham marsden

Clayton, you are definitely on to something here. In small waves, I don’t ā€œstand-upā€, rather am too low at pop-up (like almost popping to

my knees).

I can’t get past this, and I am not sure why I continue to do this. When I do pop-up to my feet, I’m in a deep squat and need to really muscle my way to standing.

So I am stuck with this sh$tty take-off and pop-up on small waves. Lifetime surfer that seems to have regressed back to the basics….

So some backstory is that I injured my shoulder surfing about 2 years ago and my paddle strength is not the best. I feel like I struggle catching the wave and end-up on late drops. If I do get to my feet, I usually fall within the first few seconds, as my board speed feels way off.

I know these waves kinda sucked in this video, but seems to carry through on all small waves. For whatever reason, I usually make medium to large waves without this happening?

Thoughts??? Thanks all
