The Carver Triton range are a great choice, they're about 2/3 the cost of the top of the line models, although I swapped the stock 78a street wheels for a set of 95a Park wheels that are more suitable for concrete bowls etc.

I wouldn't worry about the type of deck to start with, the more important thing is the axle to axle Wheelbase, because the standard "wheelbase" just measures between the inner deck screw holes, but that doesn't take into account the different types of trucks.

To get an approximate idea of what you need, draw a line on the ground and stand with your feet on it at 45 degrees.

Pivot your back foot on the heel by 90 degrees, then pivot it by 90 degrees on the toe.

Stack on the front foot and compress and extend a few times, letting the back foot move a bit if necessary until it feels right, and measure the distance.

Your front foot should be just behind the front axle and your back foot a little behind the rear axle.

Hope that helps 👍

Cath Gito  FYI I've just had the "page full of HTML after posting a reply" error again, so it seems it's not been fixed 🙁

If it's warm enough, the cream will squeeze out.

Remember Clayton lives in Oz where it can get very hot 🙂

Cath Gito  Oh and, PS, there seems to be a glitch whereby not all replies to a post allow the replier to put to Return characters to make a paragraph break.  As you can see in the reply above, each item should have been separate from the others, but it all appears as a solid block of text which makes it hard to read.

See this thread for when I was experimenting with replies here: https://train.ombe.co/community/posts/jeremy-dean-a-couple-of-comments-on

Cath Gito I'm going to email this, but I thought I'd put it in here too in case anyone else wants to add comments or observations: 1) When I look at the posts, they're sorted by "Latest Activity", however that can include someone simply Liking a post, even if they haven't added any content.  IMO it would be better if only posts that had new replies were brought to the top, so people don't have to dig down to see if there's anything new to read in a thread.2) The default order of replies is by "Popularity", however it would be much easier if it was by "Newest", again, so new replies can easily be seen. (Actually, what would be even more preferable would be if posts were threaded by chronological order 🙂 )3) It would also be simpler if all threads were expanded instead of you needing to click on the "speech bubble" icon to find the replies. PS as far as I can tell, the "post reply and get a page of HTML" bug appears to have been fixed, thanks 👍

This is something that's only obliquely surfing related, however I thought people might be interested (it's a bit of a long story, but stick with it 🙂 )

Part 1: When I was surfing at Croyde last week, I managed to flatten the battery on my car fob (I'd lain on it in the Aquapac inside my wetsuit) and had all sorts of problems getting into the car.

So I went to a local supermarket to see if they carried spare batteries. They didn't, but a bloke behind the counter said "I'm a nice guy, I think I've got one in my car, hang on..."

A few minutes later he comes back with the battery, so I say "What do I owe you?"

He says "Don't worry about it."

So I said "Ok, how about I give some money to the RNLI?"

"Sure," he says.

(The RNLI is the Royal National Lifeboat Institution whose volunteers are present on Croyde Beach during the daytime in the summer to help surfers and bathers.)

So, no problems, I make a note to do this...

Part 2: Yesterday, on X/Twitter, someone made an obscure and arcane reference in a reply. I happened to recognise what they were talking about and made a joking response in a similar vein.

To my amazement they then said "I'd made myself a deal that if anyone got one of my references, I'd donate $100 to their favourite (genuine) charity."

"Seriously?!"

"Yes."

"Ok, give to the RNLI!"

So, because a random guy did a stranger a favour, the UK's water safety charity is now $100 better off!

AWESOME! 🤙

Glad to hear you're getting back into surfing and it sounds like you're a lucky bugger living where you do!

Personally I prefer epoxy boards because they're lighter and easier to carry and paddle.

PU boards tend to be cheaper, however, if that's a determining factor.

As I understand things, more volume makes a board easier to paddle, but more length helps you catch smaller waves.

Don't forget that you can rent boards at The Wave, or at many breaks, so why not talk to the shops and try a few to see how you get on.

Hope this helps.

Nice and smooth, but I agree with Pete, you need to use the arms to point up to the lip, that way you will start skating (and, hopefully, surfing) more Top to Bottom.
