Sometimes it's the simplest or smallest things...

I've been trying to get my shortboard walk up working, ie pushing up onto my knees, rather than my toes for when I'm using a smaller board.

When I'm at home, I can practice it on the carpet, no problems, it works fine, but today I, again, couldn't get it to work.

Because of the conditions (small, a bit messy) I was using my 7'6 board which is about the shortest I can do the "toes" method, but trying to avoid doing that.

Except, every time I walked up, I was finding I still not using my knees and I couldn't figure out why, even though, before I went out, I'd practiced on the beach and it had been fine.

So eventually I rode a wave back in, put the board on the beach and tried again, seeing if I could figure out what I was doing differently.

And suddenly it clicked!

When I was on the waves, my hands were coming a bit further forward on the board so they were under my shoulders, but when I was practicing on the beach, they were down by my lower ribs!

So I went back out again and, ok, it wasn't perfect, but I was definitely using my knee/ shin much more ๐Ÿ‘

I'll have to practice more to get it drilled it, but it's amazing how much a few inches difference in hand placement can change things ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey there. I'm headed to Australia for the month of march. I'll be surfing byron bay, perth, and margaret river areas. Will i need to bring a wetsuit? if so what thickness would you recommend?

Cheers!ย

Hi! I have been surfing natural for a couple of months pretty good at popping up on a 6โ€™10 board and can turn along the wave a bit - just bought a surf skate and I am definitely goofy should I switch my surfing stance before itโ€™s too ingrained?

Is it possible to get an alternative Display Skin for these Forums?

I find white text on a black background rather difficult to read and it would be much easier if there was an option to switch to black text/ white background.

Thanks.

Hello everyone,
I'm reaching out to see if there's anyone from Ipswich/Brisbane who's also learning to surf. I'm quite new to both surfing and skateboarding, and liking these activities so far at this middle age.
I went to surf on Australia Day at Currumbin, which was my second day of surfing journey where I was fortunate enough to meet Shane and Clay. Their tips, the coffee cup and Oreo biscuits, helped me a lot to stand and catch few waves on the day. I came to how about OMBE, and I've subscribed. A huge thanks to Shane and Clay for their friendly and invaluable advice.
Given the considerable distance, the journey to the surf spots feels a bit long, and I believe it would be much more enjoyable and motivational to have a companion for both learning how to surf and surf skate. If anyone is interested in teaming up or if you're on a similar learning path, I'd love to connect and perhaps we can support each other through this learning curve.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Thanks
Chandan

Hi guys Iโ€™m a beginner/low intermediate & am really finding it click when doing the Oreo and finding the shoulderโ€ฆ however at my local surf spot a lot of other surfers manage to get on full slow rising waves even on short boards they seem to be paddling quite hard and kicking to assist and have got their chin further down than Iโ€™d expect based on what Iโ€™m learning hereโ€ฆ are there any teaching resources on riding different types of conditions or wave like dumpy/close outs???

This weekend I accomplished to not only paddle out with some of Victorias best surfers into 8ft+ surf, but also comfortably ride many of the waves.

Its taken two years to create and fine tune new surfing techniques thanks to OMBE.

Its been a hell of a journey with major knee injuries at Ulus, lower back and wrist injuries from learning to skate and freezing my ass off in the pool during the cooler months. However, its all been worth itย ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks to the team at OMBE and everyone in this community for your continuous support and good nature. Keep having fun coaching and learning, enjoy your next session surfing and I wish you all the best in progressing.ย ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ˜ƒ

A little clip of the surf attached for your enjoyment. Best I can say for location is west coast.ย
