I think you did pretty well to get beyond the whitewater from that takeoff spot.

I don't know if it's better to stay higher in the foam like you did after that initial pump or if you would have been better off staying below the foam and doing another cardboard slide.

On small/fast beach breaks I tend to get stuck behind the foam or blow right past the pocket and out onto the shoulder, so I'd be curious to know the best approach as well.

Coryn Daniel yeah not sure, says private now and I don't see it when searching on youtube.

Coryn Daniel Thanks for the encouragement.!

Graham Marsden I think I need to tie that arm to my side. I think it's reacting to something else I am doing rather than leading the movement.

For the take off, I am really surprised how much I am misreading the wave in the water. I think part of it is fear of getting stuck behind the section.

Well as usual it felt better than it looked, but I'm happy anytime I don't dig the rail on the top turn.  I can see I am still releasing out of the bottom turn too early and I didn't follow through with my back arm on the top turn, but glad the board got directed back to the foam anyway.

My main take away from this footage is my positioning at the take off.  I should have been closer to the peak right? There's a jetty offscreen that I was anxious about getting too close to, but it looks like I should have been further to the left of the screen at take off.

I've been riding mostly weak, crumbly, closeout summer time beach break waves for the last month or so.  It's nice getting out in the water and getting some exercise, but it's been frustrating in terms of my surfing and lack of progression.  Might even be regressing in some aspects.

I would definitely trade some of those ocean sessions for a more productive session at a wave pool.  I have limited wave pool experience, but hoping to get to one in the near future.

What I've found with surfing in the ocean is that I can get a fun intermediate level ride out of a good wave, but I'm not really able to manufacture a decent ride out of a bad wave the way some more advanced surfers can.

Pretty interesting the way the board really followed where you were looking on the top turn.

Graham Marsden 14 but not a whole of experience in the ocean apart from a little boogie boarding in the past.

Anybody have any good tips for assisting a brand new surfer catch whitewater waves and attempt to stand for the first time?

I'll be helping my niece in a week or so.  I have a 7'6" soft tech foam board which has plenty of volume but hoping it won't be too short.

Should I try to push her into the white water waves or just help keep her in position and have her paddle into it on her own or have her paddle and give a little push if needed?
