Scott Wagenblast As Clay often points out in the training videos and feedback sessions, if you bend from the waist, it stops you twisting so you need to be front on and stacked over the leading leg.

I'm not sure, but I think your problem is that you're bending from the waist instead of compressing your front leg and kissing the knees.

Maybe do some more surf skate practice?

To quote Ant from a long time ago, you want to keep your body straight like a pencil.

Concentrate on keeping your feet together and squeeze your butt to help you arch your back and it should be easier.

Also, yes, I think you need to get your back foot at 45 degrees from the nose so your back knee can kiss the front one, instead of pointing towards the rail.

The first question would be "what level of surfer are you?"

As well as the 4 lines content (which may be a bit technically oriented for some) there's the Surf Start and Surf Smart programmes which walk you through everything from having never touched a surf board before to advanced techniques.

Go through those from the start (you can often pick up useful tips even from the earlier stuff) and find the parts that are relevant to your current skill level.

Why do you want to get your foot back? You need your weight forward on your front foot for speed, shifting it back or stomping on the tail will just slow you down more.Do you have any video of your surfing so we can see what is happening?

Steven Segal It's the water drawing up that helps you go up the wave.

As Scott Wagenblast says, you ride down into the flats and it's not until the wave catches up with you that you start to go up.

As you take off, look at the wave and where it's drawing up so you can figure out the line you want to take, then point your knees and arms there.
