The first question I'd ask is: Are you looking at the wave? 🙂

If you're not front-on or your leading arm is in the way and stopping your twist, it's much harder to see where the water is drawing up and then lift the coffee cup to the lip.

michael lange I probably didn't explain the "going right" call clearly enough as it's also to tell them which way to go.

When I was surfing last week, a young kid (who was actually pretty good) had caught a wave and was heading towards me. It was my job to get out of their way because they had the wave, but I didn't know which way they were going to go.

Fortunately they went the other way, but without a clear cue, I had to just guess and hope.

As for your wave it's difficult to see from this distance, but it looks like there was still water drawing up that you could have tapped into rather than cutting the bottom turn short.

michael lange I'd say you could have followed a line similar to this which would have gained you more speed and got you back to the lip sooner.

Also a loud shout of "Going RIGHT!" would have asserted your priority 🙂

I'd say that if you just used a bit more of the wave, waiting longer to start your bottom turn and holding the cutback longer, you'd get the results you want 👍

That looks pretty decent to me 👍

You're facing forward and getting good extension and compression for a lot of the time.

I'd suggest working on keeping your weight on the front foot and getting your front arm out of the way by lifting the elbow and trying to put it in your back pocket which will help you look back at the foam.

Hugh Trueger Your take off looks good, you're catching the wave easily and getting up without struggling.

I'd say the issue you need to work on is your stance as you get into a side-on poo-man position with your backside over one rail, your knees and hands pointing over the other one and your weight is on your back foot, so the nose is in the air, slowing you down.

I'd suggest getting a surf skate and practicing getting front-on so your knees are pointing the way you're going and you can stack on the front foot which will make it easier to twist and compress and extend 👍

You've got a good take off, although perhaps you could have been a few board lengths back to your left to get into the wave a little earlier.

But I think your issue with speed generation is that you're not using the whole of the wave.

If you look at the screenshot, you want to go up to the lip, but you're looking down at the nose and your coffee cup arm is pointing backwards which is telling your board to slow down as your weight goes onto the back foot.

Push the coffee cup forward to stack on your front foot, then look at the lip and lift the cup there so you can tap into the wave's speed 👍

Philipp Unterreiner. In early videos, Clay suggested turning the front hand to "point with the thumb".

Personally I found that would "lock" my shoulder making it harder for me to twist.

I find raising the hand and "putting my elbow in my back pocket" makes it easier to twist.

You can always try both ways and see what works for you 👍
