You stay low on the board which means you stay low on the wave. If you extend your knees instead of locking them down, you will move more on the wave.

Stand up, go up, get low, go down and repeat

It’s very frustrating, I’m in a similar place with my surfing, but try to do a lunge type of move, bend your knees. The more you try different positions and movements, the quicker you will find the right amount needed for that wave.

There’s a lot of upper body movement that isn’t fully connecting with the lower body - as graham said, your knees are locked and you aren’t able to tell the board what to do….Until theres a person in front of you and you turn nicely ;)
