Unfortunately after only 4 sessions to start 2025, I will be out of the water for several months following a bad shoulder dislocation. I want to stay connected to surfing and the improvement process, and have always been interested in surf coaching, so I'm looking to help my friends out by filming them from the beach. I don't have a lot of experience with cameras, are there any surf coaches out there that have recommendations on cameras to use for video analysis? Thanks for any suggestions. Hopefully I'll be getting back on my own OMBE journey soon too!
Clayton answers this question on the Basis surf podcast, episode 25 around the 1:09 hour mark. My two cents is that head position will depend on your positioning relative to the wave, so each wave you are paddling for requires that in the moment assessment of what to do. I think most surfers will have a better ridden wave if they are positioned well and following the Oreo method since you will able to be smooth with your pop up, end up in good posture, and draw a nice line. In contrast if you are head down scratching into one you have a higher chance of being in an awkward stance when you get to your feet, not looking at where you are going, or getting pitched over the falls.
