Hey guys Ive got a question about foot placement right from the pop up.

Ive progressed my way down to a 6 foot groveler which works well for my mushy waves here in south florida. Im noticing when I do the walk up off my knee my back foot always lands right in front of my tail pad. Here in florida our waves are quick and fairly weak, and im trying to work on turns. That second that it takes me to move my back foot back onto my pad really kills all my speed and momentum and by the time my foots in the right place to turn the wave is usually over. Does anyone have any tips on how to practice getting up with my back foot landing right on the tail?

In terms of everything else my pop up is real solid, my eyes are always looking where I want to go not at the board, and my feet land right over my stringer so Im not concerned with working on getting my feet centered on the board. I always also pop up with my weight forward in my neutral stance just like you guys teach here. I just really need help getting my foot on my tail immediately because theres not a lot of power coming from my waves and id still like to work on bottom turns, top turns, and cutbacks without constantly bogging my rails.

Anyone have specific board recommendations for line 3? Im surfing in florida where the waves are generally pretty mushy and powerless. I’m currently riding a 7’2 nsp funboard and I definitely feel like Ive moved on to line 3 and am now looking for something more responsive. Since Im dealing with mushy soft waves I know (based off watching everything i could find on this site) that i want something with a wider nose and a swallow tail. I’m just not sure what brands, specific boards, and dimensions I should be looking at getting.

I’m 5’9 (175 cm) and weigh 195 lbs (88 kg)

Hey guys do you reccomend quads or thrusters for small powerless waves?
A typical day where I surf is usually about knee high and pretty mushy. I ride a 7’2 funboard as a thruster and ive had a lot of trouble making sections. Should I try switching the board over to a quad or just try to pump quicker to get more speed out of the gate?

Hey guys does anyone have any tips for not bogging the rail on the bottom turn on smaller days?

For reference im surfing a 7’2 NSP funboard.

I try to drop to the bottom of the wave before starting the bottom turn to get the most speed possible, but anytime I lean into the turn it just sinks my rail and I either lose all my speed or just completely push the board under water.

What am I doing wrong, and are there any drills that I could be doing to work this out?

Anyone have any tips on how to recover while still at the beach? I go out any morning that we actually have waves here In South Florida. Out here we usually only get windswells which comes with tons of current, so I’m constantly paddling just to stay In position. My paddle strength and stamina has gotten a lot better over time thanks to following all the excersizes on this site however I can usually only last about an hour and a half before I’m completely drained. At this point Im usually pretty stubborn and try push through being tired but my surfing starts to really go downhill as a result.

Should I just go back in to the beach and try to rest for a little while, or should I just be calling it quits on the session at this point?

Also is there anything I can do while still out the back to avoid getting tired?

I just wanted to make a post to say thank you very much for making the pre pop up course. I recently transitioned over to a 7’2 epoxy board coming down from an 8’0 soft top, and I was no longer able to figure out the timing of my takeoff. I found the pre pop up course after searching this app for what is possibly going wrong and wow it was a complete game changer. I had the most sucessful session of surfing today that Ive ever had. So this post is just to say thank you so much for making such great content, and for anyone on here struggling with your takeoff make sure you check out the pre pop up course!

Sincerely,
One extremely satisfied member of this site.

I had a question about getting out the back.
Where I surf here in South Florida its all beach breaks, and we really only get waves from wind swells. On days where it gets bigger the sets come in with virtually no lull and there is so much current that its incredibly hard to make it out the back.

I do surf right by a pier and this morning, after a couple of failed attempts to make it out the back, I watched a few more advanced surfers paddle out no problem by paddling right along the pier. They were pretty much almost touching the pylons thats how close they were. They were on the south side of the pier and the current was ripping south so it does make sense that the pylons would cut off some of that current.

I was just wondering if this is a typical thing to do and if you guys think this is something worth working on and getting used to? Or if this is just very much so specific to the conditions at my pier this morning.

Also I’m very aware that Ive been asking a lot of questions in this community lately and I’m very greatful for all of your responses!

How bad is chlorine for an epoxy board?
As per your guys advice I went out and bought a 7’2 nsp funboard as my first real board because it was time to move off my soft top. I took it out a few times while it was 1-2 foot and it was awesome, however the next few weeks here in florida are going to be a lot bigger than 1-2 so I’m going to need to seriously start working on duck diving. Can I practice in my pool or will the chlorine damage my board? Also does anyone have any other good recommendations for how to practice duck diving? (Other than the bosu push unders, Im working on the intermediate pathway so Ive already been working on those.)
Thanks guys!

Which board should I be looking to buy next?

I currently ride an 8 foot soft top and am able to ride down the line in both directions no problem just from angling my takeoff. Im looking into purchasing a midlength to start learning how trim properly and generate speed.

I’m 5’9ā€ and weigh 195 lbs. Also I’m surfing in Florida where the waves are generally pretty mushy. Does anyone have any recommendations for either specific boards, or at least some dimensions that I should be looking at buying?

Thanks guys!

(Also I completeded the beginner pathway, which was awesome, and have moved on to the intermediate pathway. Which is another reason why i think its time to graduate from my soft top.)
