So, I had Life Membership of OMBE.

Even though it's now become SurfLab, the OMBE Life Members have likely still been the biggest promoters of its techniques and training to other surfers.

Without boasting, I've probably been the most active member of this community, wherever possible I've done my best to offer advice and suggestions to others, expecting no reward, simply because I feel it's the best system available.

Now I've had an email telling me that, if I sign up early, I can save $50 off annual membership of SurfLab.

I thought I, and the other Life Members, might have hoped to expect something a little better.

Surf Skate on Dryland-

Have any of you guys successfully incorporated a Surf Skate protocol into your surf practice that has actually made a difference in your surfing?

If anyone has a program that works for them, or can point me in the direction of a decent resource, let me know please.

I feel like the stuff in OMBE is disorganized, or I just can’t see to make sense of what I should be doing (for progression).

Got a 2nd hand Seaside Firewire. Pretty fun board.

Heres the last wave I caught. At this point I’m struggling to consistently look good. Some waves looked decent, others less decent.

Can I have some tips on this one?

Hi I am looking at buying a new surfboard and would like some help on purchasing a new board. I am currently using a 6 7 fish surfboard that is roughly 45 liters. These are two clips attached of me below in a wave pool of where my surfing progression is roughly at the moment. My takeoff is normally better than the attached video but this can happen sometimes so any tips to improve this would also be helpful. I am looking for a board that will have some stability while also having some manouverability. I will mainly be surfing in Ireland and Sagres in Portugal. I would like to try another board other than a fish as that is what I have been using the last year or so.

A quick cautionary story:

When I surf (in the UK), of course I'm wearing my Wetsuit and anything that's exposed to the sun has a good thick layer of Factor 50 on it.

But about a month ago my partner noticed that a mole on my chest had got darker and changed shape, so I went to my GP and they referred me to the Dermatology clinic at the local hospital.

Earlier today they had a look and said "Hmm, we're not sure about it, but we can remove it this afternoon if you want. Also we'd like to do the one on your temple too."

Naturally I told them to go ahead and a short while later, both were gone.

So wear your sunblock and get your moles checked, folks!

Anyone know of a copy that’s now unwanted lying on a shelf somewhere, or unsold in a bookshop?

An important update for the OMBE community

Hi everyone,

We want to share an important update about OMBE and what comes next.

Clayton has now moved on from the business. We’re grateful for everything he contributed to OMBE and the impact his coaching has had on surfers around the world. We genuinely wish him all the best for the future.

As part of this transition, Clayton has legally required that the current OMBE platform be taken down in 12 months. We understand this will create questions—particularly for our lifetime members. Please know that we are actively working on a plan to protect the value of your membership and provide a clear pathway forward. We will communicate the details well before any changes take effect.

While the current platform has a defined timeline, this is not the end of what we’re building. It marks the beginning of a much bigger new chapter.

OMBE is now part of the broader SurfLab group, and we have assembled an extraordinary team to help build the next generation of surf coaching.

Jarrad Howse has joined SurfLab as our Director of Surfing. Jarrad is a former Championship Tour surfer and elite performance coach who has worked with some of the biggest names in professional surfing, including three-time world champion Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson and Jordy Smith.

We have also welcomed Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew AM as a SurfLab ambassador. Rabbit is the 1978 World Surfing Champion, a former President and CEO of the Association of Surfing Professionals, a member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and one of the most influential figures in the history of professional surfing.

We’ve also expanded the group through the acquisition of:

World Surfaris, one of the world’s leading specialist surf travel businesses, giving our community access to incredible surfing destinations and experiences around the world.
Surf Strength Coach, led by respected surf performance coach Cris Mills, bringing world-class strength, mobility and surf-specific physical training into the ecosystem.

Together, we’re developing an entirely new SurfLab coaching experience that will bring surfing, coaching, fitness and travel together in one connected platform. This includes:

AI-powered surf analysis and personalised feedback
Completely rebuilt coursework based on our new Five Lines progression system
Surf-specific strength, mobility and performance programs
More practical tools to help you understand what to work on and how to improve
Opportunities to apply your coaching through curated surf trips and experiences
New ways to connect with our coaches and the wider surfing community

Most importantly, we want you to help shape what comes next.

Over the coming months, we’ll be creating more opportunities to speak with the community, hear what has been most valuable about OMBE, understand where you need more support and learn how we can be genuinely more helpful in your surfing journey.

There is nothing you need to do right now. The OMBE platform will continue operating during the transition period, and we’ll provide plenty of notice before anything changes.
